Lil' Wayne Rikers Countdown: #1

As mentioned in the Throwback Thursday post (and my fb status) Lil' Wayne is free and was released from Rikers before my ass got out of bed. Alot happens when you sleep.

Compiling this list was tough in places, but from the beginning I knew "BM J.R." was going to be number one. It was a pretty easy choice, a. Its a freestyle b. Dude talks about Riken (Wheretheydothatat?).

"...I ain't tripping nigga, I play the corner like Ripken nigga
with the 40 .cal Ripken nigga, rip a nigga
flip ya vehicle, split ya windshield
wack ya baby momma but I let the kid live..."

Come on. That's a filthy line, and I love it. Secondly this line comes to mind:

"...and when we hungry you look like pie
sweet potato ass nigga, you lemon merangue, apple custard, cherry jelly
don't make me get the biscuit buster..."

I can't even fathom how many times I've texted that line. So with that here's Lil' Wayne's best song ever, off Tha Carter, "BM J.R."

Lil' Wayne Rikers Countdown: #2

PNC bank had me thinking Lil' Wayne got out today and I missed it, I was blown. However, I realized yesterday was the 2nd since it was the day for mid-term elections and I finally knew it was Wednesday since I spent all of my day in a lab class. I regained my composure, felt comfortable in that I knew what day it was and continued on about my day.

For the 2nd best Wayne song I've picked Cannon, the version that wasn't on Dedication 2. Not a fan of DJ Drama hollering every 5 seconds, in addition to Freeway, Willie the Squid and 2 other clowns jumping on the beat. Clifford Harris, Chris Bridges and Trevor Smith (Busta, I actually had to look that one up) team up with Wayne and make those other dudes look like jokes.

I've picked this song as #2 because, for my money it gets no better than this as far as a singular verse is concerned. Such flow and prose in a single verse doesn't exist, and the only reason this song isn't #1 because that song is actually a freestyle which pays homage to various pies and Cal Ripken.

Lil' Wayne Rikers Countdown: #3

"Futuristic handgun
if you act foul you get 2 shots and 1"

Okay, okay okay... today's the 2nd, Thursday's the 4th. You do the math.

I got some of Wayne's most recent work off the We Are Young Money little album that featured all of his goons (or are they goblins?) and only one song was truly notable. And here it is, "Steady Mobbin'" is dirty, grimy, filthy-ass hit-you-in-the-mouth hip-hop and cuts like this make me salivate like one of Pavlov's dogs... classic conditioning, get your psych knowledge up loser.

LIl' Wayne Rikers Countdown: #4

More from Da Drought 3. I have two tracks today, one of which is a bonus simply due to the location of where I am whilst writing this entry...

"I'm on the toilet watching Martin,
jus' laughin' and shit"

To be honest, that was probably too much information for y'all. I thought it was a pretty appropriate tie in.

Anyways the number 4 song on our countdown is "Back On My Grizzy", Wayne jumps Youngbloodz' "Chop, Chop" and destroys it... I can't even listen to the original anymore.

"You niggas suck like Tony Romo, no homo
and I'm all about my money, I get paid for promo
Yeah, I'm the man in this bitch
they say money talks, well I'm the ventriloquist"

This was inevitable. "Tha Heat" from Tha Carter.

Lil' Wayne never lied about having guns. Happy Halloween!

Lil' Wayne Rikers Countdown: #6

We're halfway there, and Weezy F. gets out on Thursday!

Today is "Wasted"... rather fitting for the Saturday before Halloween. I'm going as Ken with my significant other as Barbie. I wanted to be this guy or better yet this guy. Oh well, I'm sure I'll have some good ideas next year.

And now enjoy the music, and my single favourite line in any Wayne song.

"Stacks in my backpack. Shades on, hat back
Bugatti matte black, wheretheydothatat?"

Lil' Wayne Rikers Countdown: #7

"I'ma kick to the snare, boom to the base
what more can I say? I can't feel my face"

Yup, you know what time it is. Number 7 the list is a collaboration between Wayne & Juelz off the I Can't Feel My Face mixtape.

Not sure how these two every decided to make so many songs together, but fuck it... NO to NY yaaaaaa diggggggg? Skull Gang!

7. Lil' Wayne & Juelz Santana-Rewind

Lil' Wayne Rikers Countdown: #8

Whoops... The Wizards tip-off tonight. Not last night... so that Wale Wednesday was all for naut. Oh, well. Lets get to the music and the eighth Lil' Wayne song.

This is actually the first and only feature I have on here, it wasn't on an album and I probably should have made it yesterday's song... That's right. The "Nike Boots" remix with Wayne.

"Got to the end of tunnel, and I was the light"

This is my jam, it might have something to do with memories of me dancing on stage in a North Carolina bar to it, or it may be because of the "Hail To The Skins, rest in peace Sean Taylor. One." at the end. Whatever it is, it is. So enjoy the #8 song and come back on Friday for number seven (hint: Juelz is on the track).

Lil' Wayne Rikers Countdown: #9

Nine days 'till Lil' Wayne is released and today I have a cut from Tha Carter.

Tha Carter had to be the best of early Lil' Wayne, finding a good balance of non sequiturs, similes, metaphors and other literary devices but still keeping it hood as shit.

"Bring It Back" was Wayne's first of three singles from Tha Carter, all three consequently produced by Mannie Fresh (above). Unfortunately Mr. Fresh left the Cash Money Millionaires label and things haven't been the same... excluding Weezy F getting on "Top Back" from Da Drought 3, not quite sure that counts though.

Mannie Fresh, you sir, are missed. You and Wayne were Jordan & Pippen, J.J. Redick & Sheldon Williams, Big Papi & Manny Ramirez. The perfect 1, 2 punch.

Lil' Wayne Rikers Countdown: #10

"Aye yo I take on a gang of gangs
anything, animals, orangutans
gorillas turn to bathing apes when I make it rain"

Today marks the third installment of the Rikers countdown, and that equals ten days 'til Lil' Wayne is released.

For the #10 song, I've picked a track from arguably Lil' Wayne's best mixtape, one of which Rolling Stone hailed as 2007's 27th best album of the year (surprising... who at Rolling Stone decided to have musical taste?). Anyway Da Drought 3 was a banger except for like three tracks, "Don't Stop, Won't Stop" (Nicki Minaj's first appearance), "Forever" & "Promise", but despite those slower jamz and a Nicki verse Lil' Wayne proved he could eat up other people's beats and was on his way to mainstream success.

Lil' Wayne Rikers Countdown: Song 11

11 days 'till Lil' Wayne is released!

...and today I have a classic, "Tha Mobb" from Tha Carter II. Tha Carter II was one of those albums that grew on you with time, at first I didn't think it was even close to being as good as Tha Carter. However, every track is a piece of art. More polished and deeper than the first installment and it really shows how great Wayne was before he blew up and began rapping on everyone's single and dropping 52 mixtapes a month.

"When the jungle was open I rolled in with the riders,
stole food from the bears and bought it back to the lions."

The Official Lil' Wayne Freedom Countdown: Song #12

So as we all know Lil' Wayne was convicted on some trumped-up weapons charge, I believe the general consensus is that the cops should be out catching real criminals. Oh well, dude served his time and should be back to releasing Tha Carter IV shortly... and I couldn't be more thrilled (as long as it's a departure from his little "rock" album & Tha Carter III [way too pop]).

To celebrate Weezy F's release from Rikers I've decided to do a little countdown commemorating Wayne's top 12 songs, a song every day 'til Lil' Wayne is released. Spanning from Lights Out to We Are Young Money, twelve complete classics from the best rapper alive... after Jay-Z, Wale, Common, Q-tip and Phife.

Today I've decided to start it off with "Shine" from 2000's Lights Out. This was one of the first Wayne songs I can really remember liking... to be fair, the first was "Back That Azz Up" and I'm not really a huge fan of "The Block Is Hot" or "Bling, Bling". So let's take it back to eighth grade back when Manny Fresh was making those dope-ass beats.
